A trailblazing educator, organizer, and
advisor who founded a college that set
the standard for Black higher education
and became a powerful voice for Black
communities in government. The
daughter of formerly enslaved parents,
she rose to become the highestranking Black woman in the Roosevelt
administration and founded
organizations that advanced civil
rights, women’s empowerment, and
educational equity across generations.

A founding member of the Student
Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
in 1960, this leader was instrumental in
organizing Black voter registration efforts in
rural Georgia, emphasizing grassroots
organizing and community engagement.
