At the time of Albertson’s first store opening in 1939, it was helmed as the
largest grocery store in Idaho. With its opening came many innovations that
we still see in modern grocery stores like free parking and the money-back
guarantee. Today it is the second-largest grocery store chain in the country.

In 1930 in Lemon Grove, San Diego, the school district barred MexicanAmerican students from attending the elementary school. Parents took court
action and won the case, establishing the right to equal education for their
children. Referred to as the Lemon Grove Incident, this landmark court case is
increasingly cited as the first legal victory against school segregation.

At the age of 21, political leader Cora Victoria Diehl made history as the first
woman elected as Register of Deeds in Logan County, Oklahoma. Diehl
championed equality for women and African Americans and advocated for
"greenbackism" – a platform supporting the monetization of silver, federal
loans to farmers, income tax, and the single tax plan.

In 1973, Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. became the first Black mayor of Atlanta
when he defeated incumbent Sam Massell. Jackson would later be elected to
two more terms. Under his leadership the city built a public transit system,
invested in public works projects like the airport, and implemented affirmative
action to increase minority participation in business and civic life. The Atlanta
Municipal Airport was later renamed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International
Airport and is the busiest airport in the world.

Chicago was at one point the fastest-growing city in world history. The rapid
development put the area's natural landmarks at risk. Residents at the time
had the idea to set aside a ring of nature around the city to preserve in its
natural state. Beginning with just 200 acres, the Cook County Forest Preserve
has grown to nearly 70,000 acres today and has become home to wildlife
sanctuaries, botanical gardens, and a prairie restoration site.

In 1904, pharmacist David Strickler concocted a tasty treat to attract
customers. He cut a banana lengthwise and smothered it with ice cream,
marshmallows, pineapple slices, crushed nuts, and sweet syrups, then added a
cherry on top to create the banana split. It quickly gained popularity in soda
shops and ice cream parlors nationwide.
