LAND acknowledgment
The Southwest is home to 85 sovereign tribal nations with distinct cultures,
histories, and governmental systems. Some tribes, like the Navajo Nation, have
resided on their homelands since time immemorial, while others, like the Cherokee
Nation, have been forcefully relocated to their current lands as a result of settlercolonial policies.
No matter where you are in the U.S., you are on land with Native history. There is a
deep and rich history and contemporary culture of Indigenous peoples, including
people who live nearby and far from their tribal communities. Below are a few activities
you can do to learn more.
Visit www.Native-Land.ca to begin the process of identifying Native peoples
that inhabited (or inhabit) your area.
Follow Native advocacy organizations like the National Congress of American
Indians and the Native American Rights Fund to learn about law and policy
issues impacting Native communities.
Research Native American activists from the past and present.
Visit museums like the National Museum of the American Indian and First
Americans Museum.
Follow Native news organizations like ICT News and Native News Online.
Support Native American, not Native-inspired, businesses.
Understand the difference between Native American and Native-inspired
fashion, food and culture.
