Montgomery Bus Boycott
The arrest of Rosa Parks in 1955, for refusing to give
up her bus seat to a white man, sparked the
Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. called for a boycott of the city's public
transportation in protest of racial segregation.
Little Rock Nine
In 1957, Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas
attempted to integrate by inviting nine Black students,
known as the Little Rock Nine, to attend. However, on
their first day of school, they were met by a hostile mob,
causing them to be removed by the National Guard for
their safety.
March on Washington
The largest rally for equal rights in U.S. history took
place on August 28, 1963, in Washington, D.C., with
more than 200,000 marchers on the National Mall.
Dr. King delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech at
the Lincoln Memorial.
Civil Rights Act Signed
On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the
Civil Rights Act. The act prevented racial discrimination
in employment, voting, and use of public facilities.
